The past few weeks, a lot of news about pop star Demi Lovato have floated around the web following her apparent drug overdose. This news came as a shock to many of her fans and attracted a multitude of mixed reactions from people around the world.

All in all, there has been a swarming amount of support for the singer, whose music has touched many, from the very first news of the occurrence and until she checked herself into rehab. The world has been witness to the singer’s tough road to recovery from addiction.

In a letter she wrote to her fans, Demi states, “I have always been transparent about my journey with addiction.” The artist who came so close to the jaws of death continues to thank God, her fans and family for standing by her during the tough times.

Demi Lovato is keen to overcome addiction, but she acknowledges the tough road ahead of her. “What I’ve learned is that this illness is not something that disappears or fades with time,” she says, “it is something I must continue to overcome and have not done yet.”

Demi was discovered unconscious in her home and flown to a hospital where she spent a couple of weeks. Despite the challenging road ahead, she is focused on getting healthier and stronger. This is not the first time the pop star has dealt with addiction; however, her resolve to keep improving to avoid another relapse spells hope for her future.

Receiving support from people close to her, Demi left the hospital and checked into rehab. According to her ex-boyfriend, Wilmer Valderrama, she will need weeks of detox and therapy to get through this experience.

Her close friends disclosed that her recent relapse is due to her falling in with the wrong crowd. However, this served as a great life lesson, and at the moment, all she needs to focus on is recovery.

In her letter to fans, posted on Instagram on Sunday which was the first time she broke silence since the incidence, she states, “I now need time to heal and focus on my sobriety and road to recovery.” Adding “I will keep fighting.”

Despite the seriousness of the situation, it is encouraging that she got out with her life and is keen on recovering. From this experience, many of us can learn a couple of things to tide us through life and similar situations.

Here are three heart-felt lessons from Demi’s experience:

  •    Sobriety is a continuous journey

In Demi’s words, “what I’ve learned is that this illness is not something that disappears or fades with time. It is something I must continue to overcome and have not done yet.”

So many people in the world are struggling with myriads of addictions. It is easier to fall into a habit than it is to get yourself out of it. However, you need to realize that it takes time and continuous overcoming to get to where you want to be.

For Demi Lovato, she has been through the journey before, and despite relapsing, she is still committed to recovery. Even in other situations that we face every day, the same principle applies. For instance, if you look at success as a continuous journey, you will learn to appreciate the small milestones you accomplish and keep moving.

  •    It’s okay to admit failure and weakness

For a lot of people, hiding their flaws and fears only pushes them further on edge. Your weaknesses and failures do not define you; it is how you address them and rise from them that counts.

Demi Lovato is a singer that many people look up to, especially young people. It is very encouraging to see that she is not shy about her addiction. “I have always been transparent about my journey with addiction.” Her transparency helps people in a similar position know that you can rise from anything and even if you stumble, get up, dust yourself and keep moving forward.

Following in her footsteps, anyone who is struggling should strive to come out on the other side a stronger and more accomplished individual. In her letter, she tells her fans, “I look forward to the day where I can say I came out on the other side.” Not forgetting to add “I will keep fighting” as a sign-off.

Remember, be true to yourself, don’t put up a fake façade for the benefit of people because it will cost you a lot more to try and maintain that masqueraded self.

  •    Persevere

Nothing comes easy, and perseverance is what separates those who succeed and those who’re stuck in their situations.

Similarly, whatever you’re facing, address it with the determination to succeed with no uncertainties clouding your mind. If you keep holding on, you will come out on the other side with a story to tell.
